Cyclospora outbreak in Iowa and Nebraska linked to Taylor Farms de Mexico salad mix: FDA
In a follow-up to the announcements Tuesday by the Iowa and Nebraska health departments, which linked bagged salad mix to the cyclospora outbreak in their states, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed the source of the parasitic disease.
According to an FDA traceback investigation, it has been confirmed that the source of the outbreak was salad mix from Taylor Farms de Mexico, a processor of foodservice salads.
The agency says the tainted salad mixes were supplied to restaurants in the two midwestern states and has not been implicated in consumer packages sold in grocery stores.
The FDA told CBS News the restaurants include Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants in Iowa and Nebraska.
Both Olive Garden and Red Lobster are owned by Orlando-based Darden Restaurants. In a statement, Darden spokesman Mike Bernstein said the FDA’s announcement is “new information.”
“Nothing we have seen prior to this announcement gave us any reason to be concerned about the products we’ve received from this supplier,” Bernstein said.
According to NBC news, Taylor Farms said in a statement that the Mexican facility is “state of the art and has an exceptional food safety record.” The statement said the company is working with FDA investigators who are looking at the facility and that the product is out of the food supply.
The FDA says Taylor Farms de Mexico has been cooperating with all FDA requests during the investigation. The FDA and the firm will be conducting an environmental assessment of the firms processing facility in Mexico, to try to learn the probable cause of the outbreak and identify preventive controls to put in place to try and prevent a recurrence.
The most recent inspection, in 2011, of the processing facility of Taylor Farms de Mexico conducted by FDA found no notable issues.
Additionally, as a result of this investigation FDA is increasing its surveillance efforts on green leafy products exported to the U.S. from Mexico.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that as of Thursday, they have been notified of 400 cases of the parasitic infection, cyclosporiasis, from 17 health departments from across the country.
