Cunard Cruise Line’s ‘Queen Mary 2’ struck with likely norovirus, 205 reported ill
In what appears to be the third cruise ship to be hit with a gastrointestinal illness outbreak, likely norovirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) reports that some 205 passengers and crew aboard the Cunard Cruise Line’s “Queen Mary 2” have developed symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting, according to a CDC-VSP release Dec. 28.
The federal health agency says 194 passengers and 11 crew members have been sickened by a sickness of unknown etiology.
In a statement to ABC News, the cruise line said, “There has been an incidence of a mild gastrointestinal illness among the passengers on Queen Mary 2. This illness is suspected to be Norovirus, which is highly contagious and typically transmitted from person to person.”
The cruise set sail on Dec. 22 from New York for a 12 day cruise to the Caribbean. According to the ABC News report, the cruise liner is currently docked in St. Lucia.
The CDC says, in response to the outbreak, Cunard Cruise Line is taking the following actions to include cleaning and sanitizing, making announcements to notify passengers and crew and to encourage hand hashing, collecting stool samples for laboratory analysis and reporting twice daily to CDC officials.
A CDC-VSP team will board the Queen Mary 2 on arrival in Brooklyn on January 3, 2013 to do an assessment and investigation.
Just yesterday, The Global Dispatch reported on an outbreak on Princess Cruises’ “Emerald Princess”, in which 196 passengers and crew were sickened with a gastrointestinal illness resembling norovirus.
Earlier, a Crown Princess cruise headed for Galveston reported had more than 100 ill.
