Creator confirms Court of Owls in ‘Gotham’ season 2
FOX’s Gotham television series has kicked off its second season with the episode “Damned If You Do” introducing Tabitha Galavan (Jessica Lucas), also known as Tigress, and her brother, Theo Galavan (James Frain). Fans are eager to connect the dots to the Court of Owls from the Batman comic books.
ComicBook.com spoke to show runner Bruno Heller about this possibility of a Court of Owls connection to the new evil Galavan siblings, and he had the following to say on the subject.
“Yeah, absolutely, [I’m interested]. I won’t say that it’s part of – I don’t even want to say that, because I don’t want to spoil part of the story. The Court of Owls is deep, deep, deep Gotham mythology. The comic book fans know about it, but I would suspect the larger audience is not so familiar.”
Fans of films and casual fans of the show may not know the references, so Heller explain how they’ll address that.
“We sometimes have to make a distinction between the ‘Nolan-era Batman movie fans’ and the comic book fans. It’s not that they’re two separate audiences, just that there are two levels of engagement. Court of Owls is very much deep DC mythology.”
Among the inmates turned loose include Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan), a character presumed to be the future Joker and and Barbara Kean (Erin Richards), the ex-fiancee to newly-reinstated Gotham City Police Department officer James Gordon (Ben McKenzie).
Comic book fans may’ve also noted that it was Richard Sionis, the uncle of the man who becomes Black Mask, who got cut down by Tigress in the Gotham season 2 premiere.
This Maniax group will clearly be the main antagonist for at least the first half of Gotham season 2, but expect the Owls to come.
“We are absolutely going to explore that world down the line. Looking at the longevity of the show, we have to hold some cards back, we can’t just throw all of the elements, all of the story at once. The Court of Owls is a brilliant conceit that will absolutely be part of our storytelling. I just won’t tell you when.”
The Gotham season 2 premiere also included a subplot where Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) finally gained access to the late Thomas Wayne’s underground vault, so it shouldn’t be long before viewers (and Bruce) find out what Bruce’s father had discovered about the insidious powers that be at Wayne Enterprises.
Gotham returns with “Knock, Knock” next Monday at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
