Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Steven H. Aden spoke out regarding former Planned Parenthood clinic director Sue Thayer’s lawsuit against the abortion giant’s Iowa affiliate.

The lawsuit alleges that Planned Parenthood submitted “repeated false, fraudulent, and/or ineligible claims for reimbursements” to Medicaid and failed to meet acceptable standards of medical practice. Planned Parenthood’s motion to dismiss was largely unsuccessful, as the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa ruled in Thayer v. Planned Parenthood of the Heartland that two of the three claims may go forward.

“Planned Parenthood views women as profit centers, not patients. Taxpayers deserve to know that Planned Parenthood is acting illegally, not only by wrongfully submitting claims to Medicaid for reimbursement, but also by failing to protect the health of the women it purports to serve. Our tax dollars should fund the thousands of trusted, local public health clinics across America, not the barbaric acts of this billion-dollar corporation.”

In an op-ed for The Washington Times, Sue Thayer, a former abortion clinic manager at Planned Parenthood tackled the big business aspect of the abortion chain. She specifically discussed “telemed abortions” where a woman does not see a doctor in person prior to having a medication abortion. (See what a medication abortion ishere.)

So what does Planned Parenthood, the “trusted friend of women,” love so much about telemed abortions? Low overhead costs.

My superiors justified telemed abortions, lauding the financial benefits of not having to worry about or pay for specialized equipment, staff and a traveling physician – all required with surgical abortions.

When I expressed my concerns, I was “let go,” supposedly because of “downsizing.”

The final veil had been lifted and Planned Parenthood’s big lie was exposed: Planned Parenthood is not about helping women access health care. Instead, it is about making money. And abortion is its moneymaker. Telemed abortion is its mega moneymaker.

According to their own recently released 2009-10 annual report, Planned Parenthood performed more than 329,000 abortions. Conservatively estimating that each abortion cost $450, abortion services brought in $148 million of Planned Parenthood’s overall $320 million in clinic revenue, representing 46 percent of its operating budget.
