Connecticut Sen Chris Murphy blames mass shooting on Congress with more lies and fearmongering

Sen. Chris Murphy said Wednesday that Congress bears responsibility for the “epidemic of mass slaughter” in the US, addressing the Senate floor while news of a school shooting unfolded in Florida.

“This epidemic of mass slaughter, this scourge of school shooting after school shooting,” Murphy said, “it only happens here not because of coincidence, not because of bad luck, but as a consequence of our inaction. We are responsible for a level of mass atrocity that happens in this country with zero parallel anywhere else.”

Chris Murphy

The Connecticut Democrat has been an aggressive gun control advocate for years, using the Sandy Hook tragedy as emotional fodder for election in 2012. He’up for re-election later this year.

Murphy began his floor speech Wednesday by highlighting that “this happens nowhere else other than the United States of America.”

“As a parent, it scares me to death that this body doesn’t take seriously the safety of my children, and it seems like a lot of parents in South Florida are going to be asking that same question later today,” he said. “We pray for the families, for the victims. We hope for the best.”

Unsure of Murphy’s stats, but his claims may be rooted in the debunked stats from an anti-gun group who states this was the 18th school shooting (a figure which includes accidental misfires anyone on campus, incidents without injury and even a suicide by a non-student in a parking lot.) The data/graphic was used by all of the major outlets after the tragedy.
At for his statement: “this happens nowhere else other than the United States of America,” University of Alabama’s Adam Lankford to take an in-depth look at this epidemic. His finding are usually spun to show how mass shootings are more common in the U.S. than any other single country, a true statement, most likely attributed to the freedom of gun ownership in America and the volume of guns which exist.

“Not surprisingly, the United States has by far the most public mass shooters,” Lankford said. “We had 31 percent of total shooters, despite the fact that we only have 5 percent of the world’s population.”

Lankford said in terms of total firearms, the U.S. has more than 240 million more firearms than the next highest country — India — and almost double the number of firearms per capita compared to any other country.

Worst attack on record is the 2011 Norway attack, a country which “…has some of the toughest gun laws in the world, but they were apparently easily circumvented by the killer.” (Guardian, 2011).

The Vegas shooting was second, the worst in U.S. history and the third was in South Korea as a drunken police officer went on a killing spree before blowing himself up with a grenade. Orlando was next and then four in four different countries: Turkey, Tunisia, Russia and Australia, followed by Virginia Tech, a shooting in Colombia and the West Bank.

There was no analysis of gun free zones (Aurora theater shooting), links to terrorism (Omar Mateen in Orlando) or violations of existing laws (over 80 in the Sandy Hook massacre.)
