Colorado: Human remains found in Boulder County, coroner pending identification

On Monday, September 3 shortly after 1:00 p.m., the Boulder
County Communications Center received a phone call from two hikers who reported
that they found a skull, believed to be from a human, near Lefthand Reservoir,
in unincorporated Boulder County, in the Brainard Lake Recreation Area.

On Monday afternoon, staff from the Boulder County Sheriff’s
Office and the hikers went back to the area and attempted to locate the
remains, but the hikers were unable to direct our personnel back to the
specific area where the remains were found.

On Tuesday morning, September 4, staff from the Boulder
County Sheriff’s Office, the Boulder County Coroner’s Office and volunteers
with Front Range Rescue Dogs searched the area again. They were able to use a
photo that the hikers took to locate the remains, and while searching the area,
found additional remains. They were able to confirm that the remains are from a

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office is charged with making
formal identification of the decedent, as well as determining the cause and
manner of death. Additional information related to the decedent, including any
medical findings when the partial remains are examined, will be released by the
Coroner’s Office.
