CNN Fact Check: Background checks wouldn’t have stopped El Paso, Dayton shooting

On Monday, CNN aired a fact checking of President Trump’s support for enhancing background checks in the wake of mass shootings/terrorist attacks in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, over the weekend.

“In the wake of two mass shootings that left 31 dead, President Donald Trump tweeted Monday morning that ‘Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks,’ suggesting that the legislation be paired with immigration revisions,” noted CNN. “Would strengthening or expanding background checks have prevented the alleged shooters from purchasing firearms?”

CNN fact-check corrected this movie, stating that this was “doubtful”: There is no indication that the shooting in Dayton, Ohio, would have been prevented by proposed universal background checks or legislation to bolster the federal background check system. The alleged El Paso, Texas, shooter purchased his firearm legally and there is no evidence that he had a criminal history that a background check would’ve caught.”

There has been a bill in House, U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) introduced HR8 in January, and many Democrats and gun control activists have criticized Mitch McConnell for not holding a vote in the Senate. Reason did an analysis of the bill, pointing out the problems with the law: “If you loan a gun to a friend without going to the gun store, the penalty is the same as for knowingly selling a gun to a convicted violent felon. Likewise, when the friend returns the gun, another trip to the gun store is necessary, upon pain of felony.”

That is NOT the only problem with that bill: “A clever trick in HR8 effectively bans handguns for persons 18-to 20.”

“We’re going to have these bipartisan discussions and, when we get back (Sept. 9), hopefully be able to come back and actually pass something,” McConnell said. “I want to make a law not just see this political sparring going on endlessly which never produces a result.”

The Background Checks Act (H.R. 1112) would extend to at least 10 days the amount of time firearms dealers must wait for a response from the background check system before the sale can proceed. Currently, they can make the sale if they haven’t received a response in three days.

Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) demanded that McConnell call the Senate back into session to vote on H.R. 8 and H.R. 1112, the background check bills passed by the Democratic-led House in February.

“The House of Representatives has passed background check legislation,” Brown told Jake Tapper on CNN. “The Senate could meet tomorrow. I hope that Sen. McConnell would bring the Senate back tomorrow and pass the background check bill and send it to the president and the president must sign it. Period.”

Sanders argued that universal background checks, which have the support of 90 percent of the public, would be “a first step to addressing our serious gun violence epidemic” and preventing another mass shooting.

During coverage of these heinous killings,  CNN anchors Poppy Harlow and John Avlon falsely claimed on-air that President Donald Trump eliminated a proposed Obama-era regulation that would keep firearms out of the hands of the “mentally ill.”
