Clint Dempsey covers Outside Magazine, discusses taking on Brazil
It’s no secret: Team USA doesn’t have an easy World Cup path ahead. But Seattle Sounders star Clint Dempsey, the 31-year-old striker who ascended from a Texas trailer home to become the highest-paid American in Major League Soccer history, is the epitome of the dark horse—and the perfect player to shoulder Team USA’s daunting World Cup campaign.
In its July issue, OUTSIDE magazine speaks with Dempsey, Team USA captain. Included are excerpts from the article, also available at http://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/athletes/Clint-Dempsey-is-the-World-Cups-Champion-Underdog.html.
On his path to professional soccer: “As a kid, I used to play in Mexican leagues on Sundays. I was playing against men out there, getting elbowed in the face. It forced me to be tougher.”
National-team coach Jurgen Klinsmann on Dempsey’s skill: “Clint has daring, quickness and incredible technique. And he can create something out of nothing.”
On his team’s odds in Brazil: “We have a difficult group, but we’re doing everything we can to do something special. The team is getting stronger and stronger.”
