Whittemore killed Alexandra Kogut in her dorm room room, confessing to authorities that he “just snapped.” His defense attorneys argued that he should be tried for manslaughter, not murder, suffering from emotional trauma.

During the trial the jury was shown bloody photos of the scene and pieced together Whittemore confessing that he punched the young freshman and then hit “her with a hair straightener. ‘I thought she was dying, I really did. I thought it was like watching an animal suffer before it dies. That’s why I did the other stuff I did,'” the court heard.

“Justice for my beautiful baby #Whittemore trial” Becky Kogut, Alex’s mother tweeted – @bgkm3

The trial was delayed several times as the defense attempted to get different pieces of evidence dismissed and pursued the “insanity defense.”  The jury rejected the defense’s “extreme emotional distress” argument. Kogut’s family and friends embraced and cried in the courtroom on Friday as the verdict was read.

Whittemore now faces 25 years to life in prison. He will be sentenced July 15. The state of New York does not have the death penalty.
