The long road, detailed here, has involved evaluation of teh 911 calls, attempts to dismiss Whittemore saying he “just snapped” and possible insanity defenses. Monday was a scene of chaos as jury selection began and reporters tweeting about the event as though it was a competitive sport.

Whittemore, age 22, faces second degree murder charges for murdering his girlfriend Alexandra Kogut. Kogut, age 18, was beaten to death in her dorm room during an argument with Whittemore, who told authorities he “just snapped.”

The trial has been officially delayed four times with several other motions pushing back court dates.

TWC News highlights that her parents have used the money given to them since her death to donate it to three causes that embody the person their daughter was. Their first grants will go to:

  • The Town of Inlet to purchase a double-seated lifeguard chair for the lake where Kogut was a lifeguard.
  • Utica Dollars for Scholars for a scholarship to a graduating senior from Oneida or Herkimer counties.
  • To the literacy coalition of Herkimer and Oneida counties in honor of her love for reading.

Kogut’s mother, Becky, said the chosen organizations would have touched her daughter’s heart.
