Christopher Washington, William Athey, two Florida men die in 2 separate plane crashes hours apart

An ultralight plane crashed into some power lines just north of Land O’Lakes Florida Sunday morning, killing the sole passenger, pilot William George Athey of Odessa.

Three hours or so later, another ultralight plane crashed in nearby Hernando County killing Christopher A. Washington.

Washington’s crashed occurred at the Hernando County Airport, emergency crews responded quickly, but the aircraft was engulfed in flames.

Bay News 9 reports that witnesses say the plane took off, reached approximately 200 feet and then began struggling, stalled, spiraled to the ground and burst into flames upon impact.

Christopher Washington was 50.

Athey, age 53, took off from Pilot Country Airport, on reportedly his first flight.

Airport officials say he was reportedly practicing crow hops, which are a series of short takeoffs and landings, but during his final landing he made some kind of mistake. The ultralight was mangled and tangled into the power lines requiring the electric company to cut power to the area so authorities could salvage the wreck.
