Christian Cinema ‘Movie Madness’: ‘Son of God’ and ‘Heaven is for Real’ out as ‘Narnia’ tops ‘LOTR’ franchise

In the vein of the NCAA basketball tournament, ChristianCinema.com put together a movie bracket of faith-based films, particularly those available for purchase through the site. Now the group of 64 has been reduced by half and there have been a few updates: Lord of the Rings lost to Narnia, Son of God is out, the new documentary Patterns of Evidence didn’t make out of the first round and When the Game Stands Tall fell to Facing the Giants. The biggest upset was the fall of Heaven is For Real.

gods-not-dead-posterOf the big 2014 Christian films, only God’s Not Dead, Moms’ Night Out stands tall – a big surprise indeed. The Song, also from last year, moved on with Home Run, two film which really pushed the barriers on some of the glass ceilings for the discussion of overcoming sin.

The group of films was void of classics like Ben-Hur or The Robe (the remastered Ten Commandments made the cut) and Kendrick Brothers’ films Courageous and Fireproof, did manage to include popular recent films like The Remaining and Old Fashioned.

Looking Ahead:

Theology and Bible Epics: Passion of the Christ will likely face Ten Commandments and the battle of the most influential spiritual films will have to face off to get their chance against God’s Not Dead, a favorite to advance.

Hard to see folks betting against Charlton Heston parting the seas.

mom's night out bannerRomance vs. Comedy: This is a grouping of popular and well-received films: Mom’s Night Out, The Song, Old Fashioned, the satire Believe Me and the underrated, but entertaining What If.

Mom’s Night Out gave fans a well-made mayhem film, it should fare well.

Sports vs. Hot Topics: Who knew Facing the Giants was big enough to advance? It’s tough to determine if October Baby or Monumental could take down the Giants, which may be a sentimental favorite.

Action vs. True Stories: Kirk Cameron could emerge with Left Behind (if they can overcome Narnia) and face The Blind Side, the most acclaimed and notable film on the entire bracket.

Well, stay tuned and vote for your favorites.
