Chris Matthews says Republicans’ ‘secret weapon’ is picking on ‘ethnic’ Nancy Pelosi
MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews said that the GOP’s “secret weapon” to maintain its congressional majority is to attack House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) because she is an “ethnic sort of person.”
“I will reserve judgment — picking on somebody from one of the coasts, usually ethnic, and making them the poster person of the Democratic Party is old business for the Republicans,” Matthews said, possibly pointing to her Italian heritage.
“They did it with — way back to some guy from the Bronx back in the 40s. They did it with Bella Abzug from the West Side of New York City, they did it to Tip O’Neill, they did it to Teddy Kennedy,” he added.
“Now they’re doing it after [sic] Nancy Pelosi — they love to get an ethnic sort of person from one of the coasts and make them the bad person,” Matthews said.
In remarks at the Sheffer Corporation in Blue Ash, Ohio, Monday, President Trump criticized House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), calling her the Republicans’ “secret weapon.”
“Nancy Pelosi — what she’s doing to this country — and she’s gone so far left, and Schumer’s gone so far left — I look forward to running against them,” Trump said, referring to both the midterm election in November and the presidential election in 2020.
Trump urged his audience to “start thinking about ’18. Start thinking about November.” He said Pelosi and her fellow Democrats want to raise taxes on Americans while depriving the military of funding.
Pelosi turned heads this week with her story of her grandson wishing he had brown skin and brown eyes like one of his Hispanic friends. The body shaming moment drew attacks from the right, like Tucker Carlson.
