Chris Christie and Rand Paul go after each other over foreign policy: A precursor for 2016?
It all started when New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, speaking at the Aspen Institute said, “This strain of libertarianism that’s going through parties right now and making big headlines I think is a very dangerous thought,” at the governor’s conference.
Clearly implying Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, Christie did come out and say it, “You can name any number of people and (Paul is) one of them.”
“These esoteric, intellectual debates — I want them to come to New Jersey and sit across from the widows and the orphans and have that conversation. And they won’t, because that’s a much tougher conversation to have,” Christie said.
A precursor to 2016?
Paul responded on Twitter:
Paul’s office shot back today, saying Christie may need a “new dictionary.”
“If Gov. Christie believes the constitutional rights and the privacy of all Americans is ‘esoteric’, he either needs a new dictionary, or he needs to talk to more Americans, because a great number of them are concerned about the dramatic overreach of our government in recent years,” Doug Stafford, a senior adviser to Paul, said in a statement to POLITICO. “Defending America and fighting terrorism is the concern of all Americans, especially Sen. Paul. But it can and must be done in keeping with our Constitution and while protecting the freedoms that make America exceptional.”
Dr. Paul’s Facebook page included a smattering of posts in response to Christie–“President Obama’s favorite Republican Chris (Crist)ie thinks freedom is dangerous. Dangerous is borrowing from China to send to people who burn our flag.”
“Does Obama’s favorite Republican Chris (Crist)ie support Obama’s aiding of al Qaeda allies in Syria? That is a dangerous policy.” and
“Chris Christie praised the foreign policy of Barack Obama last night. That foreign policy is about to lead the administration and interventionist allies in Congress to arm allies of Al Qaeda in Syria.”
Well documented Paul-hater, Right Turn’s Jennifer Rubin wrote today in support of Christie, “he raises a serious and critical point: Fitness to serve as commander in chief requires many things, but good judgment, a full understanding of the threats we face and an accurate understanding of the Constitution are essential. It is also telling that Christie, in this back-and-forth, suggests that if he runs in 2016, he will use his experience in federal law enforcement. He should; Americans want a commander in chief who is going to look out for them and who knows what he is doing.”
While on the Five on Fox News Channel, co-host Eric Bolling said, “The rule of law is now dangerous to Governor Christie. You’ve lost a fan in me, sir. And anyone else who believes that the constitution is up for interpretation, especially by a governor. You can’t interpret it your way, it’s written; it’s not living and breathing. It’s written, it’s the rule of law.
“So, let me get this straight. Rand Paul is dangerous but President Obama and “Carlos Danger” are okay in your world, right now. Governor, you said you would look at people in the eye to people who’ve lost love ones in the World Trade Center.
“I was in the World Trade Center in ’93 when the bomb went off. I watched the planes go into the World Trade Center in ’01. I watched friends burn in the World Trade Center. I watched people jump out the window.
“I think I have an idea of what terrorism looks like. And it’s not innocent Americans being data-mined by the NSA. It’s Islamic terrorists. Stick to that and we’ll all ok.”
Bolling also said of the NJ Governor, “I am done with him. I am so done with him. Mark Levin warned me, he said you’re going to regret the minute you got behind this guy and you want to know something? I do.”
