China’s plan to ban shark fin soup from official banquets

With approximately 70 to 100 million sharks killed annually just for their fins and dozens of sharks listed in China as endangered species, the Chinese government says that shark fin soup will likely be banned from official banquets in about three years.

According to the Chinese news source, The Global Times, the Government Offices Administration of the State Council said the ban on shark fins at State functions is likely to take three years to implement but could be done in one or two years if proper conditions prevail.

The move followed a proposal made during the National People’s Congress in March this year.

CNN reports that Bertha Lo of the campaign group Hong Kong Shark Foundation said the move could potentially reduce the amount of sharks killed given that China is the biggest consumer of shark fin products.

“I think it will have an impact,” she said. “The government in China is powerful and if it takes the lead on this issue, I don’t see why others shouldn’t follow suit.”

According to the World Wildlife Fund-Hong Kong, as of 2010, 181 shark and related species have been listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as threatened with extinction on a global scale.
