China’s Datong University reports measles outbreak, 32 cases reported

Health authorities in Shanxi Province, located in the North China region, have announced a measles outbreak in one of the local universities, according to a Xinhua report Tuesday.

As of yesterday, nearly three dozen measles cases have been confirmed at Datong University.

At least thirty of the patients are still hospitalized for their illness, all are in stable condition.

According to the Chinese news source report, to date, 68 students with fever symptoms have been quarantined and 2,306 of their classmates and roommates have received body temperature monitoring.

Meanwhile, 3,200 people who had close contact with the infected were vaccinated in the wake of the outbreak, according to the government.

Measles or rubeola, is an acute highly communicable viral disease that is characterized by Koplik spots in the cheek or tongue very early in the disease. A couple of days later a red blotchy rash appears first on the face, and then spreads, lasting 4-7 days. Other symptoms include fever, cough and red watery eyes. The patient may be contagious from four days prior to the rash appearance to four days after rash appearance.

The disease is more severe in infants and adults. Complications from measles which is reported in up to 20% of people infected include; seizures, pneumonia, deafness and encephalitis.
