China CDC confirms 135th human case of H7N9 bird flu in Guangdong woman, Hong Kong officials concerned
In a follow-up to an earlier story, the China Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has confirmed that samples received from a woman in south China’s Guangdong Province was indeed positive for the avian influenza A(H7N9) virus, according to a China Daily report Aug. 10.
On Friday, The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) in Hong Kong reported in a press release that a 51-year-old woman was suspected of having the virus.
The case was admitted to Huizhou City Central People’s Hospital on Aug. 3 after suffering with a fever. She was later transferred to another hospital and is currently in critical condition.
The South China Morning Post reported that a team of Hong Kong experts would be dispatched to Guangdong to assess the situation if the infection was confirmed. Due to the proximity of Guangdong Province to Hong Kong, there was some real concern.
CHP controller Dr Leung Ting-hung said Hong Kong might see its first infection in the next few months, “After all, cross-border activities are so frequent; we should be prepared for that.”
This new case would be the 135th confirmed case. To date, WHO has been informed of a total of 134 laboratory-confirmed human cases with avian influenza A (H7N9) virus including 43 deaths.
