Because of the halting of all Chinese poultry products, including dried duck feathers, Indonesian badminton fanatics fear their will soon be a shortage of birdies, or shuttlecocks.

“I hope the ban won’t last long as I’m afraid that it will have an impact” on the supply of shuttlecocks, the Indonesian Badminton Association PBSI spokesman Ricky Subagja told AFP, adding professional players in the country mainly used shuttlecocks from China. Up to 40 percent of all shuttlecocks used on the archipelago are imported from China.

The human H7N9 bird flu outbreak has sickened 33 and killed nine since the outbreak began a couple of weeks ago.

Indonesia is well acquainted with a related strain of bird flu, H5N1. Since 2003, the total number of human influenza A(H5N1) cases in Indonesia stands at 192 with 160 fatalities.
