Charlize Theron talks Evil Queen, Jack Nicholson and Michael Fassbender
Charlize Theron was overseas promoting the DVD release of “Snow White and the Huntsman” and addressed the press about the Sci-Fi fairy tale adaptation and this summer’s “Alien” prequel directed by Ridley Scott.
Theron spoke to Metro in a brief interview published Monday praising the UK and explaining why she was interested in playing the Evil Queen in “Huntsman.”
“I have no interest in playing one-dimensional film characters so I never went into it going: ‘Ooh I get to play evil.’ But there’s something nice about the freedom of excusing behavior you would never do yourself. The way I yelled at people in this movie… I would never do that in real life.”
The science fiction spin on the classic tale was brought to life with Kristen Stewart (“Twilight”) and Chris Hemworth (“The Avengers” and “Thor”) and the “Prometheus” star addressed her motivation for her role.
“I was flicking through the TV channels one day watching The Shining and Jack Nicholson’s performance really inspired me in terms of being stuck in a castle. Jack is stuck in that house and slowly unravels, getting madder and madder, and that definitely connected with me.”
Theron shifted gears to discuss her role in Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus,” a prequel to the classic 1979 “Alien” film.
“She’s red tape, making it hard for everybody. She’s not a scientist. She is in charge of sending Prometheus into space, your quintessential bureaucrat. At first she comes across as very cold and frigid. Then it’s slowly revealed that she might be there for alternative reasons.”
The South African actress offered even more praise for co-star Michael Fassbender, who played the android David.
“He is one of the funniest guys I’ve ever been around. He’s so goddamn effortless that I want to punch him in the face. We instantly hit it off and in many ways he was my saving grace on the film because you have to sit around a lot. We had our dressing rooms next to each other. We’d pass each other’s rooms and be like kids in a dormitory saying: ‘What are you doing?’ We would just chat or listen to music.”
Now Theron is filming in Africa on George Miller’s return to the “Mad Max” franchise with Tom Hardy (“The Dark Knight Rises” starring as Max. The “Hancock” co-star plays Imperator Furiosa in the film, titled “Mad Max: Fury Road” due sometime in 2013.
“Prometheus” comes to stores on Blu-ray and DVD on October 9, 2012.
