MegaCon was jammed full of amazing guests and Daredevil star Charlie Cox spoke with fans about his Netflix show, starting with landing the role of the blind attorney/vigilante Matt Murdock.
“So I got an audition but I didn’t know what it was told. My agents told me it was an adaptation of Daredevil and so did my friends. My buddy told me, I think he’s blind and I was like ‘I don’t think so.’ So I went in and had to audition three or four times on top of Skype sessions with the producers. Little did I know that they wanted me based on my work on Boardwalk Empire.”
The role is extremely demanding and Cox confesses that his fitness routine is “a day by day thing. Sometimes I’m consistent and I lose focus and just want pizza. It is part of the job and that does make it easier to focus because I know what’s expected of me.”
Below are some of the questions and answers from the panel.
Daredevil season 3 is expected later this year, in the fall.

Cox as Matt Murdock on Netflix’s Daredevil
Q: I’ve heard that the best way to portray a character is to find yourself in that character. Where do you find yourself in Matt? What have you found difficult portraying Matt?
A: I think that there are two sides to that. I think it’s important to think about what you have different from the character but also recognize why the producers chose you. One of things a good friend pointed out is that as Charlie I smile a lot and that’s not something Matt would do, which is hard because I think I look like I’m mad. I love Matt because he’s honest and blunt and it’s good to recognize how stubborn Matt is and how easy it is to do. Maybe I need to work on that.
Q: What’s your Harry Potter House?

A: I’m not, not a
Harry Potter fan, but I haven’t seen them all. I guess, just to be different: Slytherin. What’s cool is that I went to a school in the UK that looks like Hogwarts, so I kinda am Harry Potter.
Q: If you could portray any other superhero, what would it be?
A: I don’t know, I feel so connected to Daredevil now. It’s probably a boring choice and I’m probably too old but I always thought Spiderman was a good character.
Q: I’m legally blind so what was the biggest struggle to learn how to portray a blind man?
A: There are many aspects to Matt so if I’m with Karen Page I have to act a certain way unlike a scene with Foggy (Elden Henson). There is often wasted time with me trying to grab a cup without looking. For example, there is a scene where a shirt is thrown at me and Matt would catch it so I actually had someone cue me from off camera.

Q: Who’s your favorite person to work with on Daredevil?
A: Once we started Season 2, I was recognizing the Easter Eggs and fandom because I read the comics by that point. The Punisher is the best because I was portraying a Matt Murdock that was too far off from Frank Castle and Jon (Bernthal) is fantastic to work with.
Q: What has been your favorite thing about working on Daredevil?
Q: Probably these things, Cons. I didn’t know these things existed. I love hearing from fans and as an actor I only hear from friends and family who always think it’s great. It’s great to hear from people who are passionate about the character and who genuinely love the show. I love when I walk down the street and people call me Daredevil.
Q: If you had to sneak around this Con as someone, who would you cosplay as?
A: I would go as a Mario Brother or maybe as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.
Q: What was your training like for Daredevil and was there any scene that stuck out to you?
A: Yea, I don’t have time learn all the martial arts but I do show up and learn as much of the choreography that I can do and they let me do. The scene from Season one in the corridor was great but most of that was my stunt double but in Season 2 we actually did a montage of that scene on the stairwell and I actually got to do more of that since I had been a year.
