Cebu City reports 121 percent increase in dengue fever cases this year
The number of dengue fever cases have increased dramatically in Cebu City, according to city health officials. The number of cases have increased 121 percent in 2012 as compared to the same period last year, according to a SunStar Cebu report Sunday.
From January to November 30, 2012, Cebu City has seen 3,632 dengue cases, a significant increase from the 1,642 cases reported in the city during the same period in 2011.
In addition, Cebu City has recorded 13 fatalities due to dengue fever this year.
The barangays (villages) with the most cases were Barangay Guadalupe with 297 and Barangay Lahug with 204.
Cebu City epidemiologist, Durinda Macasocol said the increase in dengue in the city this year may be due to the public’s “wavering vigilance.”
Dengue fever is a disease caused by any one of four closely related dengue viruses (DENV 1, DENV 2, DENV 3, or DENV 4). The viruses are transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito.
The principal symptoms of dengue fever are high fever that lasts from 2 to 7 days, severe headache, severe pain behind the eyes, joint pain, muscle and bone pain, rash, and mild bleeding.
More serious and life threatening forms of dengue include dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHS) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS).
