‘Captain America Winter Soldier’ will feature Anthony Mackie as Falcon
Comic-Con appears to just be the beginning of news for the ‘Phase 2’ series of films from Marvel Studios. Titled “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the Chris Evans led sequel will indeed add a sidekick for Cap.
Heat Vision reports on Monday that Anthony Mackie is in negotiations to star alongside Evans as Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon.
“The character, Sam Wilson, was Harlem-based and had many street adventures with Cap in the 1970s comics when he served as his partner. He derives his powers from a suit which allows him to fly and enhances his strength. He can also telepathically talk to birds. In current comics, Falcon is a key player in many of Cap’s espionage adventures,” the report details.
The Winter Soldier title nearly cements the return of Sebastian Stan, who was Bucky in 2011’s “First Avenger” Captain America film. Bucky Barnes returns in the popular Winter Soldier story as a super-assassin brainwashed by the Russians. The Winter Soldier kidnaps Sharon Carter, Steve Rogers’ love interest and an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., who escapes and plants the seed to Cap revealing Bucky’s return from the dead.
There are countless storylines tying the Falcon, S.H.I.E.L.D., Barnes and Captain America together. Once an antagonist is revealed, the fan speculation will certainly skyrocket.
Joe and Anthony Russo are directing the script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote “The First Avenger.”
Mackie starred alongside Jeremy Renner (who plays Hawkeye aka S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Clint Barton in “The Avengers”) in “The Hurt Locker” and Hugh Jackman in “Real Steel.”
MTV recounts how Mackie said in June, he’d love to play the Marvel character Black Panther. “I love Black Panther and I love the story behind it. It would be cool to be a part of it.”
Evans and Samuel L. Jackson are confirmed for “Winter Soldier” with more details from Marvel Studios to eminent.
“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” opens in theaters April 4, 2014.
