‘Captain America 3’: Sebastian Stan on new Cap, Frank Grillo talks Crossbones
The Marvel Universe keeps rolling along with Captain America: The Winter Soldier being a blockbuster success. A third Cap film is already set for 2016, with directors Joe and Anthony Russo. Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie will be back. Both Frank Grillo and Sebastian Stan speak about the fate of their two characters.
Stan’s Winter Soldier takes over for Cap after Steve Rogers is murdered and he sounds ready for that role. “Yes! Yeah, I’ll do it right now,” he said Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con about taking over the titular role for Captain America 3.
“Look, it’s not up to me. I’m just showing up when they’re calling me. I mean that’s it. But I wouldn’t mind a little Black Widow/Winter Soldier story happening.”
Part of that popular story arc in the comic books is Grillo’s character transforming into Crossbones and being crucial to the execution.
“I’m cautiously optimist that you will see me in the not too distant future in the next installment of Captain America,” Grillo told Collider while promoting his upcoming The Purge: Anarchy.
“Very early on the Russos said, ‘Look, this is an origin film for this character. We’re gonna discover who this is and this is a big movie with a lot of moving parts, but we’re gonna discover you in this film and, you know, here’s the information about who Brock Rumlow turns into and blah, blah, blah.’ And so we’ve had multiple discussions about what comes after that, that thing. So, you know, it’s obvious Rumlow is covered in rubble and burned to crisp at the end, but you see he’s still there. They don’t do that for no reason.”
Grillo joked about a mask as well, so check out the full interview with Collider here.
Stan’s role will be certainly a topic of discussion because of his reported nine picture deal, but it’s Mackie who has already been added to the Avengers lineup according to Gotcha Movies:
Elizabeth Olson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” star Anthony Mackie, and B.J. Britt (Agent Triplett from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) have all been spotted on set, in costume. The Iron Patriot armor, known for its pivotal role in Iron Man 3, has been seen, but Don Cheadle was not.
There is also reportedly a group of “costumed extras” who appear to be Avengers recruits or a means to create an Avengers West Coast team.
Right now Cap 3 opens next to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on May 3, 2016, but no one expects both films to open side-by-side. Winter Soldier found great success by opening the first week of April, so a move there wouldn’t do anything other than kick off the movie season early.
The Purge: Anarchy arrives on July 18, 2014.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to release in theaters on May 1, 2015.
