‘Captain America 3’ rumors and updates: Anthony Mackie, Russos set fans straight
Marvel Studios is still flying high with another successful summer. Captain America: The Winter Soldier kicked off the season with an April release and the creators are teasing fans with details for a third film.
Speaking with Yahoo! Movies, co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo commented vaguely on what they have in store for the highly-anticipated 2016 sequel. While Captain America 3 is still expected to center on Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) complex relationship with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), it will also retain the political and power themes from its predecessor.
“The character was invented for an explicitly political purpose,” says Anthony Russo. “So it’s hard to get away from that nature.”
The directing duo say they also don’t want the Super Soldier to become a disillusioned antihero. According to Joe Russo, “his morality is part of his superpower. We’re bringing some new elements to the table that will give us a twist on Winter Soldier.”
Cap is left in dismay and sets out to find Winter Soldier at the end of the film. Director Joss Whedon explains how he includes this in the upcoming Avengers film.
“The fact is, Ultron is a clear and present danger and Bucky’s in the wind,” said Joss Whedon, according to Nerd HQ. “We do mention the fact that that is [Captain America’s] primary thing, but he is also working with the Avengers, too. We’re not ignoring it, but he definitely has to deal with a mad eight-foot robot, because that’s one of those things, you put it off and it just gets worse.”
There are all sorts of rumors of a death Captain America, Sam Wilson taking over as Cap and while Mackie doesn’t deny the possibility, he knows that Stan is first in line.
“I think if it goes that way in the movies that it would take a long time, because there’s so many evolutions before that,” Mackie said to ComicBook.com. “I’m excited to see Sebastian [Stan] play Cap. I think Sebastian’s a great actor. But I love seeing Chris Evans as Cap, so I feel like they can go any way they want. I’m enjoying my part beside Cap. I’m in no rush to be Cap.”
Expect the storyline to travel down this road, but likely not until the end of Cap 3 – the end of Evans’ contract (and a incredible return for Avengers 3 to take down Thanos, just saying.)
Set for Cap 3 would be Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, and Frank Grillo
Captain America 3 is directed by the Russos, and currently scheduled for release on May 6, 2016.
