California students protest Bill Maher, he is a ‘blatant bigot and racist’

Conservative speakers have often gotten hostile receptions on college campuses, with calls to rescind their invitations to speak, boycotts, and bitter heckling. Now atheist, liberal HBO ranter Bill Maher is getting similar treatment from students at the University of California at Berkeley.

Bill Maher donkeyhoteyMaher has been invited to speak at a December commencement ceremony, but some of the students are angry at Maher’s past remarks about Muslims and Islam. They have started a petition, which now has more than 2,200 signatures and is circulated on change.org, demanding that the university revoke its invitation to Maher, who is described as a “racist” and a “bigot.”

“Bill Maher is a blatant bigot and racist who has no respect for the values UC Berkeley students and administration stand for,” the petition reads. “Bill Maher’s public statements on various religions and cultures are offensive and his dangerous rhetoric has found its way into our campus communities.”

Maher received criticism earlier this month when he singled out Islam on his show: “It’s the only religion that acts like the Mafia will f–king kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture, or write the wrong book.” and “You have to understand, you have to embrace the values of Western civilization. They’re not just different, they are better.”

UC Berkeley student government senator Marium Navid and Khwaja Ahmed launched the petition Thursday, according to The Daily Californian. Ahmed is a member of the Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian Coalition, which is a supporter of Navid.

In a subsequent interview with the San Jose Mercury News, Navid said she respects Maher’s right to free speech, but that a commencement address would give him greater authority. “The problem is that when you bring him to the university, you’re pretty much putting him into a privileged position,” she said. You’re raising his voice.”

Maher pointed to such principles as freedom of religion and speech as well as equality for women, minorities and homosexuals.

“These are liberal principles that liberals applaud for but then when you say in the Muslim world, this is what’s lacking, then they get upset,” Maher said.
