California: 13-year-old Andy Lopez shot and killed by Sonoma County Sheriff while carrying toy gun
A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed yesterday in Northern California after police saw him carrying what was believed to be an “assault rifle,” according to multiple reports.

According to an Associated Press report, two Sonoma County deputies on patrol saw the boy walking with what appeared to be a high-powered weapon Tuesday afternoon in Santa Rosa, sheriff’s Lt. Dennis O’Leary said.
The replica gun resembled an AK-47 with a black magazine cartridge and brown butt, according to a photograph released by the sheriff’s office. Deputies would only learn after the shooting that it wasn’t an actual firearm, according to O’Leary.
The boy’s father, Rodrigo Lopez, identified the teen as Andy Lopez and said he had been carrying a toy gun that belonged to a friend.
In a sheriff’s office news release, officials say after spotting the boy, the deputies called for backup and repeatedly ordered him to drop the gun, O’Leary said in a news release. It wasn’t clear whether he pointed the replica “assault rifle” at the deputies or made any type of threatening gesture.
It was unclear Tuesday whether the rifle, which sheriff’s officials characterized as a replica, was capable of firing BBs or other projectiles.
The Santa Rosa Police Department, in conjunction with the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office and Petaluma Police Department, is investigating the fatal shooting.
The names of the deputies involved also haven’t been released; however,they’ve been placed on administrative leave.
