Caitlin Nicol-Thomas interview: ‘The Song,’ the darkness of Shelby, Alan Powell
The new faith-based film The Song opens later this month and singer Caitlin Nicol-Thomas co-stars as Shelby Bale, the wild child musician who lures Jed off of God’s path. Caitlin spoke to Dispatch Radio in an exclusive interview, openly discussing the challenge of playing Shelby.
The Song centers on Jed (Alan Powell), a musician struggling to escape his father’s shadow, who finally finds love and God’s purpose. Her new wife, Rose, played by Ali Faulkner, inspires a powerful new song and his career takes off. Inspired by Solomon in the Bible, The Song chronicles the temptation and fall from God’s plan.
Caitlin confessed that portraying Shelby was very difficult to play, that staying in a “dark place” required her to isolate herself at times and bouncing back from that darkness was challenging. She reveals that she gave Shelby a back story, a problematic childhood, that gave her a clear understand of this woman who would tempt Jed into drugs and alcohol and away from his wife,
The music in The Song is a character as well and director Richard Ramsey teamed Powell and Nicol-Thomas side-by-side for energetic and inspirational scenes. Caitlin’s praise of Ramsey, Powell and the production team were also discussed during the talk.
Just as passionate about music, her violin, fans can get a glimpse of the energetic, honest young artist.
