A food borne outbreak that sickened nearly 500 students prompted hundreds to stage protests against school administration at the Cairo university, according to an Egypt Independent report Monday.

The Associated Press reports that the food poisoning outbreak at al-Azhar University in Cairo  forced the hospitalization of 479 students after eating a meal at the university dormitories.

The protesting students are demanding that school administration investigate the problem with poor food quality served to students.

It has not been reported what was the etiologic agent of this outbreak.

The protests caused traffic jams on the streets surrounding the al-Azhar University campus.

Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb decided on Monday to form a committee to investigate the case and requested the hospital provide all amenities required for the treatment of the injured.

Food poisoning is not uncommon in Egyptian university dormitories, where basic hygiene standards are often not observed, but the latest outbreak is the biggest in years.
