Bowen’s Botches and Bodyslams: WWE Smackdown Live Results and Review May 8 2018

Tonight’s Smackdown Live is coming from the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, MD. The first show coming off of a controversial title match finish at Backlash and leading into the next Pay-Per-View, Money in the Bank.

Show Opener with General Manager Paige

Paige addressed that she didn’t foresee the low blow confrontation between Styles and Nakamura, and we’ll be hearing from both men tonight. But now it’s about the Money in the Bank Pay-Per-View and the first qualification match is right now.

Bodyslam Paige as General Manager still feels weird to me, but I think that’s because she has always been the in-ring Paige, and she’s coming off of leading Absolution, never anything close to an authority figure. As this plays out and we see more of her in the role, I’m sure she will own it and establish herself comfortably. As it is, she emceed the opening well, and getting to the first match quickly is always a good thing.

Jeff Hardy vs. The Miz – Money in the Bank Qualifying Match

The Miz wins, rolling Hardy into a counter-pin off the Swanton Bomb

BodyslamHow do you start a show as hot as they did at Backlash with Rollins vs. Miz? With Jeff Hardy vs. Miz. Great match, the crowd was completely into it, and we got the finish we needed. Jeff can go defend his U.S. Championship, and Miz can go get beat up by Braun Strowman and Finn Balor in the MitB match. Win.

Sheamus and Cesaro in the Locker Room

BodyslamHilarious segment. Sheamus and Cesaro are gold. Sheamus had surprising emotional range.

Shinsuke Nakamura interview with Renee Young Backstage

BodyslamNakamura is at a disadvantage with not being able to use his first language, so making him the heel who only knows how to speak English when he wants to is the best way use him. But he can say he’s not done with AJ Styles, and that’s all that needs to be said really.

Carmella promo

BodyslamMella really is money. She really is the Staten Island Princess, which is probably as obnoxious to everyone else outside of Staten Island as it is to me.

Charlotte vs. Peyton Royce – Money in the Bank Qualifying Match

Charlotte forces Peyton Royce to tap out to the Figure Eight

BodyslamCharlotte missed out on the first Women’s MitB and Royal Rumble matches. She was Champion, so nobody is feeling sorry for her I’m sure. The Queen is bringing her star power to the match this year. Peyton Royce wasn’t at her best in the ring, but her and Billie Kay nailed it on the mic. She has time to master this, because the future is Iconic.

Daniel Bryan interview with Dasha Fuentes

BodyslamDaniel Bryan confident in the face of insurmountable odds. That’s part of why people love him, right?

Xavier Woods vs. Cesaro

Cesaro counters Xavier Woods’ off the top rope and scores the pin

BodyslamXavier Woods is just so good. These two had a great match, and I hope we get to see Cesaro ribbing Sheamus, since he got the win over Woods when Sheamus couldn’t.

AJ Styles Interview with Renee Young

Bodyslam Neither Styles nor Nakamura are cleared to compete tonight, but the wound on Styles’ face really sells it. He came off smooth and natural, with just the right amount of swagger. BTW, the third red jewel from the bottom on edge of the belt is missing.

Bludgeon Brothers promo

BotchThat started out creepy, and then got cheesy. They should have stayed silent or just delivered one line. The Bludgeon Brothers’ look and size sell their big and scary gimmick just fine. Less is more when it comes to the words for these guys. It’s too easy for this gimmick to go from creepy and intimidating to cheesy and lame in this day and age. And I don’t want this to get ruined. I love these guys together and want them to have success as a tag team.

Becky Lynch vs. Mandy Rose – Money in the Bank Qualifying Match

Mandy Rose rolls up Becky Lynch for the pin

BodyslamA short but sweet match. This was probably the smoothest Rose has been in the ring on TV since she came up to the main roster. Mandy Rose winning puts a fresh face in the MitB match. Becky Lynch needs to pick up a win soon.

Daniel Bryan vs. Rusev – Money in the Bank Qualifying Match

Rusev hits the Machka Kick and pins Daniel Bryan

BodyslamGreat match, great finish. Bryan has had a string of wins since his return, and this brings him and everyone else back down to Earth. Rusev goes on to the MitB match. Just like the way this show started, you may not have gotten what you wanted, but you got what you needed.
