Bowen’s Botches and Bodyslams: WWE Smackdown Live Results and Review June 12 2018

Tonight WWE Smackdown Live comes from the FedExForum in Memphis, Tennessee. The final show before the Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View features a non-title match between United States Champion Jeff Hardy and Shinsuke Nakamura after a war of words on Twitter between them. Daniel Bryan will face Shelton Benjamin and General Manager Paige will be hosting a Women’s Money in the Bank Summit.

Women’s Money In The Bank Summit hosted by General Manager Paige with Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Naomi, and Lana

Paige introduces the women representing Smackdown Live at Money in the Bank, and says she doesn’t care which one of them win, as long as one of them brings the Money in the Bank briefcase back to her house. The ladies begin bickering and making their case as to why they will win. The Iconics then arrive and make fun of them all in turn. Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville come out and declare the talent out of the ring is superior to the talent in the ring. Becky Lynch leads the MitB competitors in the attack on the four women outside the ring. The women fight until officials arrive to end the melee.

BodyslamPaige is doing well in her role, the banter between the women was entertaining, and The Iconics were on fire. Obviously, there will be an 8 Woman Tag Team Match later tonight.

Daniel Bryan vs. Shelton Benjamin

Daniel Bryan forces Shelton Benjamin to tap out to the Heel Hook.

BodyslamIncredible match to open the show, though it had a shaky start. Great story in the ring, classic mat wrestling, and two top tier athletes showing solid fundamentals. Everything a great pro wrestling match should be. And the crowd still loves Daniel Bryan passionately.

General Manager Paige Backstage

Paige encounters Asuka who says she wants a match with Carmella tonight. Paige says she can’t do that, but she can make it a 10 Woman Tag Team match tonight, which appeases Asuka. Paige then comes across The Miz dressed as an official, and he wants to referee the match between Rusev and Samoa Joe tonight. Paige resists, knowing he just wants to interfere with his MitB competition, but ends up giving Miz what he wants.

BotchPaige letting Miz be the referee didn’t make much sense the way this played out, but she did the best she could with what she was given. Miz had a little stumble on the script, but that could be because it was confusing material. Otherwise, Paige is nailing it tonight.

Jerry “The King” Lawler on stage interview with WWE Champion AJ Styles

BodyslamYou can’t do a wrestling show in Memphis without The King. AJ cut a solid promo and Memphis got to see Jerry Lawler. Styles is definitely on edge going into Money In The Bank, and at his wits end with Nakamura.

Rusev accompanied by Aiden English vs. Samoa Joe with special guest referee The Miz

Rusev lands a Machka Kick and pins Samoa Joe. The Miz hits the Skull Crushing Finale on Rusev after the match and climbs a ladder to take the MitB briefcase. Inside the briefcase were pancakes, a prank from The New Day.

BodyslamRusev and Samoa Joe match up incredibly well, in both size and style. This was a great match that I hope to see again soon in a longer format. The post match antics were quite entertaining.

Shinsuke Nakamura vs. United States Champion Jeff Hardy – Non- Title Match

Jeff Hardy wins by Disqualification after a low blow from Shinsuke Nakamura. Nakamura hits a Kinshasa after the match and counts to ten.

BodyslamAnother great style matchup that made for an impressive performance. Regardless of how things play out at Money In The Bank, these two should find their way into a feud afterward. They both have unorthodox styles that aren’t even similar, but they came together smoothly. The match had their signatures, but wasn’t close to what these are capable of. This is another match that left me wanting more. But without a low blow disqualification finish.

Carmella Backstage Interview with Renee Young

BodyslamCarmella continues to be a sensational shallow and unaware champion, and looks good doing it.

Big Cass Backstage Interview with Renee Young

BotchBig Cass is well spoken and can probably do well if given better material. The roller coaster sign promo was just silly. This won’t get him heat, it will get him written off as boring and lame.

Charlotte Flar, Becky Lynch, Naomi, Lana, and Asuka vs. Mandy Rose, Sonya Deville, Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, and Carmella

Asuka makes Carmella tap out to the Asuka Lock.

BodyslamAs confusing as a match this big is, this one worked out. There were a lot of great matchups throughout, and the finish gave the fans what they wanted. There were some botched moves and awkward moments, but the pace of the match kept the fans from being able to dwell on them. Overall, it was a good way to lead into Money In The Bank while having pieces set up for afterward. The ending is definitely foreshadowing an Asuka victory at the Pay-Per-View.
