Bowen’s Botches and Bodyslams: WWE Smackdown Live Results and Review July 24 2018

WWE Smackdown Live comes from Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana this week. Smackdown General Manager Paige has announced that she will reveal the WWE Champion AJ Styles’ opponent at SummerSlam this evening. With The Miz’ new show Miz & Mrs. premiering after tonight’s Smackdown, there is certain to be an appearance from him.

Show Opener with the Arrival of The Miz, Maryse, and their baby girl Monroe Sky.

BodyslamOf course the show opens with the arrival of Miz & Mrs. and their baby girl. The crowd roared as they filed out of the limousine, and I’m with them.

Randy Orton In Ring

BodyslamOrton took the hard heel turn and blames his actions against Jeff Hardy on the fans. He has taken on an anti-internet smark, indie darling adversary role. I absolutely loved it, and Orton is better as a heel anyway. How does a heel get real heat in the internet age of fans obsessed with their own opinions? Take shots at their obsessions.

Rusev with Lana vs. Andrade Cien Almas with Zelina Vega

Almas pins Rusev after a Hammerlock DDT.

Bodyslam I want this match again, longer and without interference. This was a great matchup of contrasting styles, and could be one we see more of in the future as a championship rivalry.

R Truth and Tye Dillinger in Locker Room

BodyslamR Truth and Tye Dillinger have chemistry. Maybe a tag team is in their future. Both could benefit from such a pairing.

Aiden English, Lana, and Rusev Backstage

BodyslamLana and English fighting for Rusev’s favor didn’t work out. Rusev powefully pushed them away. This was not a pleasant Rusev Day, and anyone in Rusev’s path should be afraid.

R Truth vs. Samoa Joe

Samoa Joe win by Submission, forcing R Truth to tap out to the Coquina Clutch.

BodyslamR Truth came out on fire and going big, including almost launching himself out of the ring when hitting Joe with a corner splash. But after getting in three moves, Joe took control and squashed Truth. I missed R Truth and am glad to see him back.

Asuka Backstage Interview with

BodyslamAsuka is excited for Evolution and to face Billie Kay. It’s hard to not get excited watching an excited Asuka.

Asuka vs. Billie Kay with Peyton Royce

Asuka pins Billie Kay after a Kick Combination.

BodyslamBillie Kay is great at what she does. Her posture after she slapped Asuka who then rose to her feet told more of a story than anything she could say. That’s the kind of subtle performance that earns her a place on the roster that many critical fans don’t understand, but it is the essential psychology of a successful professional wrestler. Asuka was good too, but it was basically a squash match for her. She didn’t even do a finisher. She just beat up Billie Kay and pinned her.

Shinsuke Nakamura in Locker Room

BodyslamShinsuke is somehow creepier than Jeff Hardy and the Bludgeon Brothers. I can’t quite articulate why, but he is creating a deeper emotional reaction in my every week.

Smackdown General Manager Paige In Ring to Announce AJ Syles’ Opponent at SummerSlam

BodyslamJames Ellsworth getting fired and Paige literally kicking him out of the building was the most satisfying moment in WWE of this year. It was quickly superseded by the revelation that AJ Styles will be facing Samoa Joe at SummerSlam, which is now the most satisfying moment in WWE this year.

Samoa Joe and Paige Backstage

BodyslamSamoa Joe’s promo ability is second to none. Leading into Paige and Carmella was excellent.

Carmella (c) vs. Becky Lynch
If Becky Lynch Wins, She Faces Carmella for the Smackdown Women’s Championship at SummerSlam.

Becky Lynch wins by Submission, forcing the tap out from Carmella with the Disarm Her.

BodyslamBoth women were at their best, and the inspired performances of the women’s division continues this week. Carmella was better than usual, and Becky really was straight fire.

Bludgeon Brothers Backstage

BodyslamA short and sweet promo, without getting too strange or goofy. This is a perfect Bludgeon Brothers promo.

#1 Contender Tag Team Tournament Match
The New Day (Big E and Xavier Woods with Kofi Kingston) vs. Sanity (Alexander Wolfe and Killian Dane with Eric Young) with The Usos on commentary

Xavier Woods pins Alexander Wolfe after the Up, Up, Down, Down double team maneuver with Big E. The Bar (Sheamus and Cesaro) entered the arena after the match and called out The Usos for next week.

Bodyslam Enough cannot be said about how spectacular these two teams are in the ring together. They have a chemistry that betrays how long they’ve been performing together. The New Day vs. Sanity could be feud of the year if this continues.

Miz and Maryse with Paige Backstage

BodyslamSin Cara babysitting, that’s what I really want to see.

Miz & Mrs. Premier Party with The Miz, Maryse, and Monroe Sky In Ring

Forever an #AList entrance. #SDLive #MizAndMrs @mikethemiz @MaryseMizanin pic.twitter.com/yThNtbGwlV

BodyslamThis was the least tasteless segment WWE has ever aired with a tossed baby. Relativity earns this a positive rating, and I’m leaving it at that.
