‘Bourne Legacy’ sequel gets a new writer for the ‘new’ creative team is formed
Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass were the first exits from the Jason Bourne franchise and now the fifth film will be without Tony Gilroy as well. Bourne 5 is moving ahead with Fast Five director Justin Lin and a new screenwriter.
Sherlock Holmes writer Anthony Peckham was set to write the film, but a new THR report on Thursday states that Universal has changed again, bringing in Andrew Baldwin, who wrote a draft for the Logun’s Run remake.
THR writes “Baldwin, repped by CAA and Anonymous Content, worked on Warners’ Logan’s Run remake and wrote the original spec Bastille Day, a terrorist thriller being made by Vendome that has Idris Elba attached as one of the leads.”
Jeremy Renner is set to return as Aaron Cross, the new protagonist introduced in Bourne Legacy, taking over after the exit of Damon and Greengrass.
Damon has repeatedly discussed a return to the franchise IF, that’s the big “IF,” Greengrass was brought back to lead the project.
““I’ve always been open to it if Paul Greengrass is the director,” said Damon to CNBC this week, when asked whether he would consider returning to the character. “We’ve just never been able to come up with a story.”
Greengrass explained his exit from the Bourne franchise back in the fall and does not want to return.
“In the end I felt I had given it my all in two films I’m very proud of and didn’t want to make another if I didn’t believe it could be as good if not better. The problem with franchise films is, if you do one too many that is not good, you’ve ruined the whole thing for yourself. I couldn’t come up with an idea, and the business reality of franchises is that when a studio has a Bourne, they’re obliged to make one every couple of years. I discovered in my heart I didn’t have another one in me. I would be going through the motions and I could never do that. On the first two Bourne films, I gave 1000 percent commitment. I was full of new ideas when I came in and took over, I knew there were things I could do and had a vision. The best thing was to move on, have someone else come in and make their mark on it.”
There is no other casting news and the story is under total lockdown, so stay tuned.
The Untitled Jason Bourne film is set for a August 15, 2015 release date.
