Boko Haram, Muslim terrorists in Nigeria, target army barracks, kill innocents in new attacks

PRESS RELEASE: Militant members of Islamist group Boko Haram attacked an army barracks in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, Nigeria March 14, reports Catholic News Agency. The assault caused harm to Nigerian soldiers as well as citizens. There were casualties on both sides of the attack.

Local Maiduguri resident Jamila Yusuf reported to the Nigerian Daily Trust, “They set many houses on fire and killed innocent people.”

A source claimed that the attack on the barracks released dozens of imprisoned suspected Boko Haram members, but the Nigerian military has not confirmed this claim as fact.

Two days previous to the barracks attack, Boko Haram violently assaulted a boarding school to the west of Borno, Nigeria. The death toll reached 29 high school-aged students.

Boko Haram translates to “western education is sinful” and has killed thousands of people since 2009. The terrorist group has targeted its violence mostly in the northern Muslim region of Nigeria. The U.N. estimated that approximately 470,000 Nigerians are displaced internally due to the violence.

Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Jos said in February that government officials are unable to stop the violence due to assistance for Boko Haram from groups outside the country.
