Body of missing 4-year-old Logan Fontana found by fisherman
A 4-year-old Florida boy fell out of his grandfather’s boat during Memorial Day weekend without a lifevest and sadly, was found dead late Tuesday night.
The body of Logan Fontana was found floating in the Pensacola Bay by a fisherman after a couple of days searching revealed nothing. The fisherman alerted authorities using an onboard radio, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Lt. Doug Berryman.
“He was right in our search area,” said Berryman. “He was probably a quarter mile to a half mile west of where he fell off. Our boats were all around him, and it was just seconds until we got there and got him.”
The search for Logan began Saturday soon after his grandfather George “Steve” Maye noticed the boy had fallen from the boat without his life jacket.
Lt. Berryman, with the Florida Fish and Wildlife said that’s when the grandfather turned his attention to the boat traffic.
“The grandfather was looking at the boat traffic trying to find a space to go. He had picked up speed from idle to 10 miles an hour which is still very slow, and he turned around to check on the grandson before he actually put throttle to the engines, and the grandson was gone,” he said.
“We had 11 boats out yesterday, and we were expecting 5 today, at the moment I think we have about 15 boats out today,” Berryman said, surprised by the great turn out of support to find the boy. Nine agencies from Florida and Alabama took part in the effort.
No word on funeral arrangements at this time.
