Bob Newhart wins his first Emmy for his ‘Big Bang Theory’ guest appearance

Bob Newhart, among TV’s most enduring stars with shows stretching back more than five decades, cried as he finally captured his first Emmy Award.

The awards show primarily honors the behind-the-scenes folks of the television world but also recognizes actors in guest roles ahead of the main event next weekend. The audience gathered at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre gave Newhart a standing ovation upon the announcement of his name.

“I was totally unprepared for that,” he told press backstage.

“This is my seventh shot at this. … I just love this very much,” he said, gazing tearfully at the trophy in his hand as the audience applauded.

When Leonard and Sheldon learn that Professor Proton can be hired for private events, they hire him … to hang out with them in their apartment.

“I just felt the kind of stuff I do doesn’t win awards. I didn’t want to go through the process, the disappointment,” Newhart said about giving up on submitting his name for the award

HBO’s Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra was the night’s top-winning individual program at the ceremony honoring technical and other achievements. .
