Doctor strange Marvel Comics imageMarvel has officially confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch will indeed be the star of Doctor Strange, putting an end to the long casting process. The studio has found its star and producer Kevin Feige has high praise for the Sherlock star.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity. In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character,” Feige stated.

Scott Derrickson (Sinister) is directing the film from a screenplay by Jon Spaihts.

Here’s how Marvel officially describes the picture:

The film, directed by Scott Derrickson with Jon Spaihts writing the screenplay, will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

Cumberbatch is filming the Sherlock Christmas Special and will make a return to theater, so production may be months away. While Joaquin Phoenix came close to a deal for the role, fans are clamoring over the Star Trek Into Darkness coming to the Marvel Studios universe.
