Benedict Cumberbatch explains ‘Doctor Strange’ is ‘very different’ as Marvel evolves
While Marvel Studios put The Inhumans back into movie limbo, Benedict Cumberbatch promoted Doctor Strange, promising a “different hero” and tone that fans have seen before from their other superhero adaptations.
“It’s a very different feel, different hero and different set of circumstances to what we’ve seen before, Cumberbatch tells Empire in the new issue. “It’s another moment during Marvel’s evolution.”
Director Scott Derrickson confirmed the approach: “We felt free to go as far as we could imagine,” he expands, “so we’re doing a lot of things that I think have not been done before. Once we’d crossed a certain line we just kept going.”
Stephen Strange (Cumberbatch) is a popular yet arrogant New York surgeon who is horribly maimed after a car accident and becomes both powerful and humble after training with The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Strange meets Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo.
Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen and Rachel McAdams also star with Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Scott Adkins, and Amy Landecker.
Doctor Strange arrives in theaters on November 4, 2016.
