Benedict Cumberbatch confesses he fell for ‘neutron cream’ sun tan lotion prank on ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’

Benedict Cumberbatch was tricked by his co-stars into ‘protecting his skins from the lasers’ during the production of Star Trek Into Darkness. Cumberbatch was fooled into covering his face with sun tan lotion after he was told it was a cream specially formulated to wear during dangerous scenes inside a laboratory.

Star-Trek-Into-Darkness Chris Pine Benedict Cumberbatch photo“We were in a really futuristic laboratory with lasers that were trying to split a target smaller than a human hair to create a continual form of energy. And I was like, ‘Wow, this is the real deal, what can’t we touch’ What’s safe’’” Benedict said during an appearance on UK TV series The Graham Norton Show on Friday. “I got on set and was told I needed to wear ‘neutron cream’ to protect me. I was gullible and did what I was told, it’s America and there is a lot of health and safety.”

Chris Pine also appeared on the show and recalled how seriously Benedict was about protecting his skin on the set of Star Trek into Darkness.

“And we told him he had to apply the cream in dots all over his face and there he was doing this really intense scene with sunscreen spots all over him,” he laughed.

The Sherlock star soon realized he had been pranked, but insists he reacted to the stunt with good grace.

“I should have known. They had me, completely had me. It was really very funny,” he laughed.

Cumberbatch joins Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg in the Star Trek sequel.

Star Trek Into Darkness, directed by JJ Abrams, arrives in theaters May 17.
