Ben Carson on gay rights question: we follow the law, LGBT community don’t get ‘extra rights’
Dr. Ben Carson was questioned today during his confirmation hearing as the nominee for Housing and Urban Development head. It’s no surprise that the liberal senators would attack the former GOP presidential candidate as a bigot. asking about laws related to the LGBT community.
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) pressed the Housing and Urban Development nominee about whether he would enforce LGBT protections in the public housing sector.
“Of course, I would enforce all the laws of the land,” Carson responded. “Of course, I think all Americans should be protected by the law.”
“What I have said before is I don’t think anyone should get ‘extra rights,’” Carson added.
From his 2014 CPAC speech: “Of course gay people should have the same rights as everyone else, but they don’t get extra rights,” Carson said at the time. “They don’t get to redefine marriage.”
Carson, a conservative Christian, has often been attacked by the LGBT community, suggesting they take advantage of “political correctness.”
During a 2015 speech to the Iowa Freedom Summit, Carson addressed religious freedom concerns raised by Christian bakers who argue it violates their faith to bake wedding cakes for gay people.
“[That] is really not all that smart, because they might put poison in that cake,” Carson joked.
In 2013, during an interview with Sean Hannity, Carson said, “Well, my thoughts are that marriage is between a man and a woman. It’s a well-established, fundamental pillar of society and no group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA, be they people who believe in bestiality, it doesn’t matter what they are, they don’t get to change the definition. So it’s not something that’s against gays. It’s against anybody who wants to come along and change the fundamental definitions of pillars of society. It has significant ramifications.”
As Eddie Murphy said, “What a silly negro!”-seriously though-WHAT EXTRA RIGHTS???
