Following, and noting the approved practice in the Netherlands, Belgium appears to be moving ahead on approved euthanasia for minors who are suffering from an incurable disease , particularly cancer , and whose death is expected within a short time.

The Netheralnds have been targeted by euthanasia critics because there has been a 13% rise in euthanasia death, which is now 3% of the total deaths – more here.

Earlier reports suggested that the child euthanasia bill would be voted on in May, but little dispute is expected from the Chamber of Deputies says the report as opposition mounts from citizens and doctors.

38 Pediatricians drafted a response saying the bill is not necessary “Even the most complex medical cases can be solved in the current legal framework, with the means and expertise at our disposal. For whom is this legislation therefore designed?” their statement began.

“Children in Belgium are not suffering. The palliative care teams for children are perfectly capable of achieving pain relief, both in hospital and at home.(Point 3) A sensitive child may perceive the option of euthanasia as a solution or a duty, especially if the child feels that the parents can no longer bear to see him suffer.”

They concluded by speaking against the “urgency to pass the bill” and how subjective the assessment required is written in the language of the bill.

Critics have referenced several cases and reports that confirm euthanasia is already “under reported” and done without the proper requests. Pro-life groups are mounting protests calling on opposition to the bill as these two concerns should never be applied to children.
