Baton Rouge police killer Gavin Long linked to Nation of Islam, racist YouTube videos

The Louisiana shooting which left three police officers dead and others injured, has the country struggling to reconcile recent crimes with allegations of racism. The murderer has been identified as a former Marine, Gavin Eugene Long, a former member of the Nation of Islam who railed against “crackers” on his YouTube channel, speaking out about the Alton Sterling case.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has used a speech in Australia to condemn the killings of three police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Biden told a crowd at a Boeing factory he is visiting in the city of Melbourne on Monday that the slayings were a “despicable act.”

The Youtube account operated by Long, 29,  show that he was a former Nation of Islam member, discharged from the Marines in 2010 with rank of E-5 and very vocal on recent events, like the Sterling death.

“I want to let ya’ll, if anything happens with me … don’t affiliate me with nothing … I’m affiliated with the spirit of justice, nothing more nothing less.”

The slain officers have been identified as Montrell Jackson, Matthew Gerald and Brad Garafola. The other injured sheriff’s deputies are 41-year-old Nicholas Tullier an 18-year veteran, and 51-year-old Bruce Simmons, a 23-year veteran. Tullier is in critical condition while Simmons has non-life threatening injuries.

Long has a massive Internet footprint, social media presence and a website called Convos With Cosmo in which he describes himself as a “freedom strategist, mental game coach, nutritionist, author and spiritual advisor.”

Long officially filed paperwork in Jackson County, Missouri, last year declaring himself Cosmo Ausar Setepenra, a “sovereign citizen” of the United Washitaw De Dugdahmoundyah Mu’ur nation, a loosely affiliated network of mostly African Americans who claim to be Native American and don’t believe the U.S. government has jurisdiction over them.
