Barbara McAveeney murder suspect, Matthew McAveeney, arrested in NC

A Massachusetts man wanted in connection to the beating death of his mother (Barbara McAveeney) has been arrested several states away in North Carolina on Tuesday.

Matthew McAveeneyMatthew McAveeney, 46, was arrested for the murder of his mother, Barbara McAveeney, 70, who was found dead at the Parkview Condominium building in Winchester, Mass. on October 14. Police responded to concerned calls and performed a wellness check which led officers to her dead body.

According to authorities, details pointed to Matthew and an arrest warrant had been issued. Police then notified Belmont, North Carolina police when McAveeeney had been spotted in a Walmart in the town.

“This was a cruel and heinous attack on an elderly woman in her own home,” Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a press release at the time the cause of death was announced. The man resisted arrest, was described as “combative” in the CBS coverage and even “assaulted” an officer.

McAveeney is expected to be brought before a judge on Wednesday in Gaston County District Court in Gastonia, North Carolina, the article stated.

“In light of the terrible allegations in this incident, the horrific beating and murder of a 70-year-old woman in her own home, we are pleased that the defendant is now in custody,” Middlesex District Attorney Ryan said. “We await his return to Massachusetts so that our prosecution can move forward.”

McAveeney faces murder and other charges including two counts of cruelty to animals.
