On Tuesday, former First Lady of the United States Barbara Bush passed away at the age of 92.
“A former First Lady of the United States of America and relentless proponent of family literacy, Barbara Pierce Bush passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at the age of 92,” Jim McGrath, the official spokesperson for former President George H.W. Bush, said in a statement.
“She is survived by her husband of 73 years, President George H.W. Bush; five children and their spouses; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her brother Scott Pierce,” McGrath continued. “She was preceded in death by her second child, Pauline Robinson “Robin” Bush, and her siblings Martha and James R. Pierce.”
President Donald Trump tweeted simply, “Melania and I join the nation in celebrating the life of Barbara Bush.” The current first lady released this statement:
Our hearts are with the Bush family as we celebrate the life and mourn the loss of Barbara Bush. Throughout her life, she put family and country above all else. Her dedicated service to the American people was matched only by her compassion and love of family. She was a woman of strength and we will always remember her for her most important roles of wife, mother, and First Lady of the United States. My heartfelt condolences and prayers are with the Bush family as we honor her legacy.
Many on Twitter shared clips from a 1990 speech she brought at Wellesley college’s commencement. at the time, some college students protested the former First woman’s selection because turned into now not a “profession lady.” The “Silver Fox” addressed the talk head-on: “somewhere out on this audience may also be someone who will one day follow in my footsteps, and preside over the White House because the President’s partner – and I wish him properly.”
