‘Avengers’ director Joss Whedon discusses James Spader being cast as Ultron for sequel

Fans may have been a bit surprised by the casting of James Spader as the villain in the Avengers sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Director Joss Whedon made a statement via Marvel’s The Watcher to say he was the only “man for the job.”

the-avengers-2-age-of-ultron-logo“Spader was my first and only choice,” says Whedon. “He’s got that hypnotic voice that can be eerily calm and compelling, but he’s also very human and humorous.”

“Ultron is not Hal. Spader can play all of the levels. He’s the guy to break The Avengers into pieces. Muwahaha.”

There was still no details on how the creature would be brought to life through motion-capture, but fans agree that Spader has a great resume of “menace” in his voice.

Ultron is a mad artificial intelligence housed in an adamantium robotic body and is a regular nemesis for the Avengers lineup. The original creature was created by Hank Pym, but fans are presuming that a tie-in to Tony Stark’s technology seems more likely for the film.

Avengers: Age of Ultron will arrive in theaters May 1, 2015.
