‘Attack of the Clones’ and ‘Revenge of the Sith’ get 3D release dates in 2013

Back in 2010 George Lucas and Lucasfilm detailed plans to re-release the “Star Wars” films in 3D beginning with “Phantom Menace” in 2012. Now a panel at the Star Wars Celebration in Orlando this weekend has provided details and release dates for the next two films.

At Saturday’s panel titled “The Future of Star Wars 3D” with Dennis Muren and John Knoll, “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith” were announced for the fall of 2013. The theatrical 3D re-release of “Clones” will be on September 20, 2013 with “Sith” coming a few weeks later on October 11, 2013.

The dates were announced shortly after the panel on the official Facebook page.

“The Phantom Menace” grossed $43 million in the 3D showings, which is viewed as a success, but well below Disney’s “Lion King” 3D re-release which earned $94 million.

Plans for the original trilogy: “A New Hope”, “The Empire Strikes Back”, and “Return of the Jedi” appear to be arriving in theaters no sooner than 2015.

Muren and Knoll discussed the painful details of the yearlong process that went into converting “Phantom Menace” and showcased a 3D clip from “Clones.” The montage included Kamino, Coruscant, the Yoda and Dooku fight, and the gathering of the clone troopers among other scenes.

Muren explained how important the conversion process is: “You guide the viewers’ eyes just like you do while you’re filming. You can change textures, accentuate facial expressions during close-ups, and in some places even re-create pieces of the backgrounds.”

Knoll praised 3D, as he likes “the freedom of the method because you’re not locked into certain aspects like you are with film that’s actually shot in 3D. ”
