Arlene Barnum details ‘murder’ of Anthony Hervey, car accident
Following the rally called “Monumental Dixie” in Birmingham, Ala., a black supporter of the Confederate Flag was driven off the road, flipped in the vehicle and killed.
Anthony Hervey, 49, was with fellow supporter, Arlene Barnum, who is recovering from the incident, adding details to the story revealed through her Facebook posts.
Barnum frantically posted during the incident, “HELP … They after us. My vehicle inside [sic] down,” quickly followed by another post indicating Anthony was trapped in the wrecked vehicle.
“Anthony Hervey pinned in ., gas leaking,” she wrote.
Barnum said Hervey yelled something back at a group of young black men in a silver vehicle which had chased down their SUV, yelled obcsenities and even side-swiped the truck, causing it to lose control and crash.
“It spun like crazy and we flipped, flipped, flipped. It was awful,” she said.
She said she gave that account to a Mississippi state trooper when she was taken to a hospital after the accident.
Hervey has drawn attention over the years for opposing efforts to change the flag, dressing as a Rebel soldier to honor blacks who served with the Confederacy during the Civil War. He was often seen often wearing the Confederate uniform and waving a Rebel flag on the Oxford square.
“This is not racism, this is my heritage,” Hervey was quoted as saying.
