Arizona State University student Xiaoyuan Zhang arrested for taking pictures of women in bathrooms

An Arizona State University student has been arrested for allegedly taking pictures of women in bathrooms.

Xiaoyuan Zhang, 21, was seen taking pictures of women in bathroom stalls on the Tempe campus before someone called police. ASU police responded and found Zhang in a nearby lecture hall.

Police reported that there was a language barrier, therefore he was taken to the ASU police station and interviewed in Mandarin. He allegedly gave officers permission to look through his phone, where six pictures of women inside of bathroom stalls were found.

“During the interview process, the suspect gave us consent to look at his phone,” said Katy Harris, a spokeswoman for ASU Police Department. “When we looked at his phone we did find images of females in bathroom stalls.”

He was arrested and booked on suspicion of surreptitious photography.

During the police interview, Zhang reportedly told officers he had a “dirty mind” and “that’s why he took the video.”

He has a $5,000 secured bond and is on an immigration hold.

“Definitely upsetting especially if it’s like so easy for that to happen but it’s nice to know that they were arrested,” said ASU student Xenia Vandendriessche.

A court official told the suspect at his first court appearance that he will appear before an immigration judge before his release from jail.

The court official told the suspect that the immigration judge could release him, set a bond for his future appearance, or detain him in advance of deportation.

Zhang is a registered student, but does not live on campus.
