Anthony Hopkins will add ‘Red 2’ villain to resume

Earlier this month it was reported that Catherine Zeta-Jones and Byung Hun-Lee were joining the all-star for “Red 2.” Now the film appears to have added its villain with the casting of the amazing actor Anthony Hopkins.

Heat Vision reported Thursday that the “Silence of the Lambs” star will be escaping from another insane asylum to play a scientific genius opposite Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker and Helen Mirren.

Willis  described the film “Red” as a ‘mixing up of the genres,’ in this month’s Esquire magazine interview.

“We were really trying to mix things up there — comedy, action, romance. We kept thinking one of these elements is going to disappear. But they all held up. We’re making another one this fall.”

Hopkins is currently filming the Alfred Hitchcock biopic “Hitchcock,” alongside Mirren for FOX Searchlight. He is also slated to return as Thor’s father Odin in “Thor 2,” which opens next November.

Director Dean Parisot (“Galaxy Quest”) takes over as director after the 2010 “Red” was a pleasant surprise at the box office. The Warren Ellis comic book was well adapted and opened with $22 million its first weekend, proceeding to earn over $90 millon in the US and $185 million worldwide.

“Red 2” (an unofficial title) will open in theaters August 2, 2013.
