Anjelica Huston named PETA’s ‘Person of the Year 2012’
Academy Award winning actress Anjelica Huston was named the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) “Person of the Year” for 2012 for her activism for animals this year, according to a PETA press release Friday.
According to the animal rights group, because of a 2008 Huston video expose on how great apes suffer in the entertainment industry, now all of the top 10 advertising agencies in the U.S. have adopted policies stating that they will not use chimpanzees and other great apes in their commercials.
In addition, the 61-year-old “Prizzi’s Honor” star was honored for other acts of activism in 2012 to include an appeal to the New York City Council to support a bill that would phase out the city’s archaic horse-drawn carriage industry as well as a letter to the Irish government urging the country to honor its commitment to ban fur farms.
“I grew up in Ireland and used to wear fur,” Huston wrote. “I had a change of heart when I learned how minks and foxes on fur farms are crammed into tiny, dirty cages and driven so crazy by the confinement that many … cannibalize their cage mates.”
Bill Clinton, Ellen DeGeneres, and Russell Simmons are some of the previous winners of the PETA Persons of the Year.
