Amir Masih family recount arrest, torture and death in Pakistan

According to Morning Star News, police in Lahore, Pakistan have tortured a 28-year-old Christian man to death. Amir Masih’s family claims he was illegally detained by police on August 28, tortured for four days, and died in a hospital on September 2.

Masih worked as a gardener in the PAF Colony in Lahore. A theft case was registered by his employer, Rana Mohammad Hanif, and Masih was called to the North Cantt Police Station for questioning.

My brother went to the police station of his own will,” Sunny Masih, Amir’s brother, told Morning Star News. “When he reached there the cops seized his phone, bundled him into a vehicle and spirited him to some unknown place.

According to Sunny, the police tortured his brother for the next four days. “[They] urinated on Amir’s face and body and mocked his Christian faith while trying to torture him into a false confession,” Sunny told Morning Star News.

On September 2, police contacted Amir’s family and told them that Amir was not well. The police told the family to take Amir to the hospital. Covered in the marks of extreme torture, including bruises and burns from electric shocks, Amir died at Services Hospital only a couple of hours after he was taken then by his family.

Pakistani Christians experience widespread discrimination and religious intolerance on a daily basis. On occasion, this discrimination and intolerance can have deadly consequences. Amir is survived by his wife and two sons, one 7-years-old and the other 14-days-old.
